The Argonauts proved very important to the journey for the Golden Fleece. A few, more important characters, actually saved the crew for death a few times, others kept them moving, and the rest were helpful as sailors and company.
At the first stop, Hercules gathered up all the Argonauts and got them back on course for the Fleece after spending a year with women, who made them forget their goals for the journey.
Hercules also saved the Argonauts at their next stop, where he realized giants, the enemies of the island on which they visited, were blocking the harbor. Hercules with assistance of some crew members were able kill off the giants and sail on.
After leaving Hercules behind, which was Zeus' will, the Argo landed on an island, which the king demanded a boxing match before they could land. Pollux was chosen from the Argonauts to fight the king, and ended up killing the champion.
The next time the Argo stopped, Zetes and Calais, winged sons of Boreas proved very helpful. Coming up to Phineus, who was cursed with Harpies, the crew decided to help the man, so at dinner, when the Harpies came down, Zetes and Calais attacked, driving the Harpies away.
When passing through the Symplagedes, Typhus and Euphemus, two of the crew’s best sailors, commanded the Argonauts though the rocks, after releasing a dove, and got them through to the other side safely.
Orpheus, who played a magical lyre, saved the whole crew when they encountered the island of the sirens. Seeing all of his crewmates under the spell of the sirens, and the direction that they ship was headed, Orpheus played his magical song, which being more powerful that the sirens song, bought the crew out of the chance just in time to save the ship from crashing into the island.
Medea and Hera, though not truly part of the Argonauts, also saved the crew from grave danger with their cunning ways. Hera did it because Jason had proved himself to the Goddess and Medea for her great love for Jason.
